12 official procedures available

The police are responsible for criminal prosecution, averting danger and public safety. Criminal complaints (Strafanzeige) can be filed at any police station or online via the Online-Wache (online police station) of your federal state (Bundesland) — free of charge and around the clock.

In an emergency: 110 (police) or 112 (ambulance/fire brigade). The Online-Wache exists in all 16 federal states, but its scope differs from state to state. For offences involving threats or violence and for traffic accidents, the police explicitly advise against it: report these in person or via the emergency number.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about the police

Can I file a report online?

Yes. Via the Online-Wache of your federal state you can file criminal complaints, theft reports and reports of loss (Verlustanzeige) 24/7 from home. Available in all 16 federal states.

What does filing a criminal complaint cost?

Nothing. Criminal complaints are always free of charge — whether in person, by phone or online. You do not need a lawyer. A false report, however, is a punishable offence.

When do I call 110?

In case of acute danger, an ongoing criminal offence, traffic accidents with injuries, or urgent emergencies. Not for general enquiries — contact your local police station for those.

Do I have to report theft to the police for insurance purposes?

Most insurers require a police report as a condition for settling the claim. You receive a reference number, which you then give to your insurer.

What is the difference between the Minor and the Major Firearms Licence?

Minor Firearms Licence (fee under state law): allows carrying blank-firing, irritant and signal weapons in public. Major Firearms Licence: allows carrying live firearms — granted only in extreme exceptional cases.
